Sears, long famous for its catalogs and Craftsman tools, today within the span of a few minutes jerked hundreds of pornographic DVDs from its online store after outraged families flooded the company with complaints.
The campaign had been launched by officials with the American Family Association, which alerted its several million constituents to the situation only hours earlier.
"When AFA reported Sears was selling pornographic DVDs on its website, Sears initially told AFA supporters that it was untrue," a followup announcement from AFA chief Tim Wildmon said.
"Finally, Sears called AFA on May 6 after AFA supporters flooded the company with calls and emails. During the call, Sears again vigorously denied they were selling pornography. However, AFA clearly showed Sears the material on their very own website!"
He said when Sears realized the mistake, the company issued a statement to AFA:
"We sincerely apologize to any customers who were offended. Our agreements with our vendors prohibit content that is pornographic or sexually explicit in nature. We are removing these items that do not meet our guidelines. We regularly review our processes to ensure compliance by our vendors, and we encourage our customers and community to help us flag any items that they believe might violate our guidelines."
AFA said within the space of half an hour, hundreds of the pornographic DVDs disappeared from the Sears site.
AFA explained it had been trying quietly to alert Sears to the problem and obtain action. The organization went so far as to order one of the products as proof of their availability from Sears.
"AFA ordered one of the DVDs to see if it really came from Sears. It did! It was mailed to us in a Sears envelope, with a Sears shipping lable, from a Sears distribution center," the organization's original alert said.
On the AFA website, the organization posted a blurred image of "10 Sex Starved Babes," created by "Juicy Plum Presents" that advertised "non-stop female orgasms."
Other titles included "Snatched!: Curse of the Pink Panties 2," which is rated "NR" and is from "Celebrity Video Dist," "Bloodsucking Babes from Burbank," rated "R" and "Hot & Exotic," rated "NR," from Shami Productions' "Juicy Solo Chicks."
Mailing label from Sears, contents: Explicit porn
It also featured "Hot mamas like young chicks three" and advised "All persons depicted in this work were 18 or older at the time of creation of such depictions, in accordance with 18 U.S.C."
AFA reported its officials also never had to identify the age of the purchaser during the checkout process.
"Technology allows Sears to remove and stop selling these products within minutes, if they want too," Wildmon said when he suggested consumers contact the company.
A WND request for comment from Sears did not generate a response.
The poster images were graphic: four couples with arms and legs intertwined who appear to be wearing nothing but each other and some foamy waves lapping at their ankles.
The poster image was highlighted by the theme: "Safe sex is hot sex."
Another revealed two topless women embracing, wearing only the skimpiest of shorts, a model who appeared to be wearing some water and a small sponge, and a group of women wearing revealing lingerie.
