I have never worked at a worse place in all of my retail life, which is extensive. And steve who posted above is obviously a plant.

My opinion is simpy this. For some people, it isnt the best place to work at. I spent 5 years of my life there. My first two years I loved going there. It was fun because I had amazing co-workers to work with. Some management were pains in the asses but others were cool & down to earth. My last 3 years werent so great but what kept me staying there was my comfortability with the place & my co-workers i had in my new department, they were & i loved bull shiting with them. If i wasnt for working for Sears, I wouldnt be where I am today. I'm working as a full-time graphic artist & a part-time valet and I LOVE both jobs. For some people, sales may be the best thing for them and they are probably very good at it. Maybe some people love general labor and not dealing directly with the public working as an MCA. It varies from person to person. The thing about that place is when they know they can take advantage of one person, they will fully do it & they will not give a shit. Don't get me wrong, they are flexible with hours but once they do you that favor, they feel like you owe them for them being so flexible if you have school or other arrangements. There are so many other department stores, if thats your thing, or other jobs that are far better. I would never go back there again because after I left, things only got worse and they will never be good again at that company. It's not a great place to work, but if you would like to try it, I say try it. You will never know if you like it or not unless you try. Or, if anyting..just use them for a couple years while you earn a degree to get a way better job. Remember, they won't hestitate to let go of someone because everyone in that company is replaceable. There will always be someone applying there without knowing how it is, how the company works. Those are te ones that get stuck there.

I used to like going to work when I first started, but the past few years have been miserable. Store manager and OM where I work are nasty and rude for the most part...no people skills at all. No filters as far as what they say, how they say it and who they say it in front of. I'm currently looking elsewhere for a company who respects their employees..wishful thinking on my part anyway.

Is Sears a good place to work? As a retired retail worker that has worked for some of America's largest retail companies I would have to say Sears was undoubtedly the worst place I ever worked. As an example, I was working for Sears when 911 happened. We were the ONLY store in the entire mall that remained open for business as the airplane strikes continued. When hundreds of mall employees were released to be with their families while America was being attacked, Sears number one priority was profit. I never forgot that and I never will. Has Sears changed much since then? I really don't know. Like most former employees, I haven't stepped a foot in a Sears store since I had the good sense to quit. In answer to your question, I would advise you to proceed with great caution. If you don't find any career associates (10 years plus) at your store, there is a reason.

having worked for sears for nearly 42 years, the first 24 being a home deliveryman and loving and enjoying nearly every minute of it, I can say that sears was a wonderful employer for whom to work. after becoming bldg. enginer, then fsa than pmt and then qmt and district qmt, the demands of the job and the expediency expected were nearly impossible. all of the new roll-outs plus all of the maintenance and repair of registers, phones, hvac, plumbing and all the electrical in the facility plus moving cash wraps on a regular basis was an exercise in total insanity. this job could not be handled by three persons, let alone, one. the DFM was under tremendous pressure to perform through his qmt's and if they did not perform, he was poorly rated. our dfm had two preferential qmt's whom he allowed to wander throughout the dist. like wandering dogs, doing and performing absolutely nothing but reporting back to daddy. once was pulling cabling in the thousand oaks, California store with another qmt and three other qmt's, (preferential treatment) simply disappeared for 3 hours, to where, I have no idea but this idiocy continued on and on. I also place the blame on some of the insane OPS MGRS. WHO THINK IT IS COOL TO PUT IN EMERGENCY WORK ORDERS ON FRIDAY NIGHTS WHEN NO ONE WORKS ON WEEKENDS AND WE GET DOWNGRADED FOR NOT PERFORMING THE EMERGENCY TASK WITHIN A DAY SINCE WE ARE NOT THERE ON WEEKENDS. WHAT A BUNCH OF JERKS. NOW, YOU WILL GET EVEN LESS WORK DONE SINCE YOU HAVE PROVEN YOURSELF TO BE A JERK. AM GLAD TO BE RETIRED, AWAY FROM ALL THE DELEGATED STUPIDITY, NONSENSE AND ABSOLUTELY ARBITRARY MADE BY PERSONS WHO HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO CONCEPT OF WHAT IS ENTAILED IN FACILITIES MAINTENANCE AND THE WIDE SPECTRUM OF KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE TASKS. AFTER 42 YEARS, I THANK YOU FOR THE FIRST 25 AND THE REMAINING YEARS, THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO RETAIN A SEMBLANCE OF SANITY DESPITE YOUR INSANE, STUPID AND IGNORANT DEMANDS FROM THE OPS MGRS. WHAT A BUNCH OF COMPLETE FOOLS AND IDIOTS WITH A MEGALOMANIACAL COMPLEX. EVEN HITLER NEVER PERSONIFIED ATTITUDES SUCH AS THEIRS. THANKS FOR ALLOWING ME TO VENT SINCE I HAVE BEEN RETIRED FOR QUITE SOMETIME AND NEVER SET FOOT IN THE STORES AGAIN. I HOPE THEY SINK TO THE BOTTOM, NO CUSTOMER SERVICE, NO PRODUCTS, NO KNOWLEDGE AND NO ONE CARES ABOUT ANYTHING. THEY JUST SHOW UP FOR WORK. BYE BYE SEARS AND MAY ANCHOR ALWAYS BE ON THE BOTTOM

Insane metrics. Employees come and go. Strategy is to pressure new employees or those that will tolerate them as much as they can. SOS for almost 2 decades now.
Sears lost the war by early this century. The transition/remodels around 2002ish would the last ill conceived attempt to improve the brick and mortar stores. Anything after is based on cost cutting, profits and greed. The hedgefund takeover and the sellout by greedy old Sears Roebuck management sealed Sears fate and working conditions forever. More agreements and credit cards/app now, yesterday! In the meantime inventory, selection and service tanked, plunged or plummeted.

recently went into our local sears again to find the same thing, "empty shelves", associates who have absolutely no knowledge of any of their products, simply want to sell a p.a. but cannot tell you why or where it will be repaired, etc. have totally discontinued purchase of any major appliances, major tools, etc. when the company finally goes belly up, whomever purchased their warranties will undoubtedly go under within a year as well since they will find it impossible to fulfull the repair agreements. simply put, STAY AWAY FROM SEARS, IT IS A NEARLY DEAD HORSE. REMEMBER, WHEN YOU RESURRECT A DEAD HORSE, ALL YOU GET IS HOOVES! bye-bye my old 42 years of service to a company which took care of us and a company of which we were proud. no longer, it is trash, no loyalty among associates, absolutely no caring attitudes among assocs. first time in many years I have purchased a small item from sears. have stuck with Costco, home depot and lowes for fine products, service and producdt availability. sorry my old pal sears, no loyalty here anymore since all qmt's nationwide suffered the layoff. that is why the stores look horrendous, registers don't work, phones down for a week at a time, on-line products delivered to the store cannot be located, central call taking is a joke since no one on the store answers phones anymore, producing more customer frustration. the answer very quickly is QUICKLY LOCK THE DOORS, TURN OFF THE LIGHTS AND SAY GOOD-BYE TO SEARS. LOVED THE TIME WITH THE COMPANY BUT IS NOW A DEAD HORSE NOT WORTHY OF RESURRECTION.

I worked at Sears for 10 years at 3 different stores; from stockboy, cashier, department manager (which was taken away from me due to favoritism and nepotism) to draw vs. commission sales (where I was told I would earn more money, but didn't + trying to sell maintenance agreements) where I couldn't make ends meat. I've been recognized for "outstanding customer service," but I've had customers curse at me if an item was out of stock, and have been spit at if didn't wait on them ahead of someone else. I had to deal with shoplifters and internal theft at each location. I had to deal with drunk employees at each location. I dealt with a buyer who honked off Nike so Sears didn't carry Nike shoes; and was more concerned about his boat and his next cigarette. I saw a manager routinely bring in his plastic-wrapped newspaper from his driveway, go to his office and close his door, and "hide" inside for the remainder of the day and deflect any situations to someone else; refusing to answer calls and requests for assistance. I was told to report to corporate for a higher position; went to a designated room where other next-level corporate were, only to be shown another "B" room with rejects. Behind another door at corporate, there was continuous ongoing laughter. My subsequent calls of inquiry were unanswered and my messages were unreturned. My management position was given to someone with no retail experience and was based on favoritism and nepotism. Though I educated her on the basics; cash register operation, scheduling, staffing, stock room, meetings, and products; she took the department staff to a conference room and with the door open, bad-mouthed me to everyone - unaware I was just outside the doorway, and offered no apology. I've dealt with continuous dishonesty. While at work, I had my car serviced at the auto center and was told my vehicle was stolen. The authorities were never called and hours later, I was told my vehicle was "misplaced" and was offered no explanation or apology, only an implication the auto manager was glad I didn't tell the store manager at a staff meeting. Suffice to write, I dealt with a lot of situations; it was a tough dollar to earn - and certainly not enough to live on full time. Sears was not a good place to work at.
